CALIFORNIA: Samuel P. Taylor

Follow the twists and turns of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard westward from US Highway 101 just north of the split with I-580 to find this special gem in the Redwoods of Marin County. Samuel P. Taylor State Park comprises two adjacent campgrounds, the Creekside Loop, which lies alongside Lagunitas Creek, and Orchard Hill Loop, just a short climb away. The park intersects the Cross Marin Trail, which winds its way through central Marin to meet up with other trails, such as the Pioneer Tree Trail in Wildcat Canyon. Continuing westward, a thirty-minute drive crosses Route 1 and leads to the scenic beaches of Northern California and provides multiple opportunities for hiking and biking.

Creekside Loop has some sites with ample space for RV parking and 20 tent campsites right along the creek’s edge. Sites 21 – 25 form their own cluster away from the creek. The Orchard Hill Loop is made for smaller vehicles and tents and contains the remaining sites, including a centrally located group site.

The park is very popular for its access to natural scenery and remains busy throughout the year. Access to Lagunitas Creek is restricted for parts of fall through spring to allow for salmon spawning. Of course, one of the main attractions to Samuel P. Taylor is the dense population of redwood trees.

Currently, our coverage of the campground is missing 13 campsites, but we do include the Group 3 and Hike/Bike sites here. There are also four cabins that can be reserved, and more information about those can be found on the park website.
